Website Development Needed

Dear CS undergraduate students -

I have a paid opportunity for an undergraduate to develop and maintain a website on research in new materials for photovoltaics (solar cells) that are composed of elements that make them work better & cheaper to allow the industry to expand at its current 40-100% annual growth rates for the next 25+ years.

The project is funded by a NSF grant I am working on and would entail:
1) design of a database-driven website to keep updated bibliographies on the topic, contact info for groups working in the field, and useful information on these materials for solar cells extracted from the research
2) implementation and management of the site
3) improvements and suggestions for other functionalities
4) involvement in literature searching, etc would be preferred but not necessary as my grad students and I will do this part anyway.

This position will be paid hourly at a competitive rate.

Technology and Civil Liberties Policy Internship –
San Francisco, California

The ACLU of Northern California has internships available for graduate and law students to work in the area of technology and civil liberties.

The ACLU of Northern California is an affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, a national nonprofit organization devoted to the protection of civil liberties. The ACLU uses a combination of litigation, negotiation, lobbying, and grassroots organizing to achieve its goals. More information is available at www.aclunc.org/tech.

Position: 
The intern will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technology and civil liberties issues- working in the San Francisco office of the ACLU of Northern California.

The intern will conduct legal and policy research; help draft reports, analyses, articles and testimony; and brief the ACLU staff on a variety of technology issues. Topics may include online privacy, RFID technology, biometrics, data mining, new surveillance technologies, and other similar threats to privacy as well as free expression and the Internet. The intern will have the opportunity to participate in staff meetings and work with other interns in the San Francisco office. She or he will likely attend meetings and events throughout the Bay Area with the Technology and Civil Liberties Policy Director.

Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in law school or a graduate program in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Science, Public Policy, Political Science, Journalism, or a related field.

  • Excellent writing and communication skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong interest in the intersection of civil liberties and new technology, particularly privacy and free speech.

  • Energy, enthusiasm, creativity.

Supervision: 
The Technology and Civil Liberties Intern will work directly with, and be supervised by, the Technology and Civil Liberties Policy Director. The intern will also interact with staff in the San Francisco office, the legislative staff in the Sacramento office, and the National ACLU Technology and Liberty Project staff in Washington, D.C.

Time:
During the school year, internships may be from two to five days per week.  For summer internships, full-time applicants are preferred, but part-time and “split” summers may also be available. 

Pay/Credit:  
During the school year, most students work for credit only. For summer internships, students are encouraged to seek grants and work study through their law school if available.

Xactware Database Developer

Summary of Responsibilities:
Develop and maintain the server-side software technology of an industry leading business-to-business system, which includes:
  • Oracle 10g databases
  • Application servers (Clarion, C,C++, PL/SQL, XML)
  • Report data generator (PL/SQL, materialized views)
  • Data warehouse (PL/SQL, star schema)
  • Billing application (Clarion, Oracle Financials integration)
  • Data imports/exports (ftp, MQ, Web services)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Design, document, code, test, debug, configure, and perform all other development tasks.
  • Provide technical designs and database structures for customer-driven projects
  • Implement technical designs using best coding practices for maintainability and greatest flexibility for future enhancements
Job Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent degree
  • Relational databases, SQL
  • C, C++
  • Windows-based client/server technologies
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills

Project Engineer I

SUMMARY
Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, implementation, execution, control and completion of specific projects ensuring consistency with company strategy, commitments and goals - Completes assigned activities under general direction of Delivery Manager or other Senior Project Managers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
1. Reviewing all applicable job data, including POs, project plans, specs, and providing comments when applicable;
2. Coordinating with Operations Manager and other Project Managers to meet scheduled task deadlines, maintain schedule for purchasing, fabrication, construction, inspection, start-up, etc., and prioritizing staff workload to meet goals;
3. Scheduling project review meeting, focusing on scope of supply, cost, construction, and project scheduling;
4. Advising Operations Manager of project status while adhering to all appropriate policies and established safety procedures;
5. Report any variations to management, including costs and problems which may change the forecast delivery, profitability, warranty etc of such contracts;
6. Communicating promptly with customer on project schedule and any issues relating to that contract;
7. Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures;
8. Other duties may be assigned as required.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
B.S. degree in an Engineering Discipline from an accredited University or in Senior level coursework – no work experience necessary.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret industry related documents.
Ability to understand English via written and verbal communication.

INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT, DECISION MAKING & PROBLEM SOLVING:
Ability to make decisions requiring the use of a variety of variables in standard situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Computer Skills: Competency in MS Office programs (Word, Excel, etc…). Proffered knowledge in MS Access. Basic understanding in AutoCAD and a 3D modeling software application.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply advanced mathematical equations to a variety of complex, non-standard situations.

Travel: Occasional travel may be required.

Other:
o Ability to read and understand specification, fabrication, erection, and standard engineering drawings;
o Knowledge of machining, fabrication, and assembly techniques;
o Knowledge of drafting standard for both structural and mechanical design;
o Knowledge and understanding of Commercial Terms & Conditions and Contract law
