Game Development Contest

Greetings Students.

The SoC and the U Bookstore are looking to start a Game Development Contest.  The contest will focus on a Flash App that can be posted on the bookstore web page.  Some examples of previous apps that have been put on either the U's web page or that of BYU are:

http://www.byubookstore.com/ePOS/form=robots/catalog.html&this_category=899&store=439&design=439

Current game theme needs are Football, Basketball and Gymnastics, but Football would be the most prevalent for now with Basketball coming up in the Fall, and Gymnastics a little later.  The idea is to make a fun little game with adaptive difficulty that would award coupons (or some such) to the best players (and thus, of course, encourage people to visit the U's bookstore).

We would like to get a number of teams working on designs.  Official rules will be published once we find if there is enough interest, but in general, you would be developing a simple game, and members of the SoC faculty and the Bookstore staff would choose the best games and place them on the web page.  These games would then be voted on by the website users and the best one would be the winner and the team would then receive some merchandise or a gift certificate.

A couple of notes.  The game would need to:
  1. Have a way to allow the bookstore to easily adjust the level of difficulty.
  2. Allow the user to "win coupons" and also track said coupons with a unique id and give them a 7 day expiration date.
  3. Have the coupons easily turned off, but still have the game playable.
  4. Have a way to change the colors/theme so that we could substitute opposing teams (e.g., BYU one week, then USU the next (of course, come to think about it, I don't think we will be playing USU...
  5. No trademark usage or copyright logos can be used in the game.  You can put a place holder in until we get final graphics approved by University Licensing.
  6. You would be able to create a credit's list with your name on it.
Design teams should be a couple of people.  If you are interested, please email me a team name, the team members, and a rough idea of what you would create.  I'll officially let the teams know the start date and end date once everything is set.

I think this is a great chance for you to get a little publicity and see what putting together a real flash app is like, as well as possibly adding to your "portfolio" and resume.

cheers
  jim
