CS student needed for Web-based information projects

The Utah Geological Survey (UGS) will likely be hiring a computer science student for Summer 2011 to support the development of several Web-based information projects.  The first project will involve developing an emergency information clearinghouse that will be used in response to various geologic-related emergencies (earthquakes, landslides, etc.), and the second project will involve developing a paleontological (fossils) locality database.  Both will require fairly extensive database work.  We are also anticipating the emergency information clearinghouse will have some mobile device access from smart phones and tablets. 
 
We would like to find a student with experience in PHP, mySQL, MS SQL, and C++/C# programming, Apache Web server, mobile devices, and Windows/Linux operating systems.  Project functionality, workflow, requirements, and user interface layout assistance will be provided by several geologists at the UGS, and development assistance from another programmer.  The position will likely be 40 hours per week for up to four months starting in May 2011, with a salary of $14.03 per hour.  Interested candidates should send a current resume to Steve Bowman, Geologic Hazards Program Manager at stevebowman@utah.gov by May 2, 2011.  Additional information about the UGS may be found at geology.utah.gov.

The project involves extracting and merging data from multiple file formats (.pdf, Microsoft Access, etc.,) and websites. Candidates with experience in PERL, Access, Excel preferred. Software Development Internship

Department Overview

Enterprise Management Group (EMG) is at the core of Symantec’s security strategy for the Enterprise. Secure Enterprise is Managed Enterprise! This team makes it happen by developing management products, components, and  services for rapid delivery of integrated solutions in order to offer better protection, reduce the cost of security management, and react to customers’ changing needs.




Responsibilities

• Develops tools for data aggregation and reporting. 
• Creates queries for SQL and other data sources. 
• Analyzes and documents business needs and designs systems to meet those needs. 
• Understands upcoming technologies and participates in determining best directions. 
• Solid understanding of software design principles preferred.




Qualifications

• Currently pursuing Master’s or PHD degree 
• 1-2 years of development experience. 
• Proficiency with ASP .Net and C#. 
• Experience developing data access code and SQL queries. 
• Understanding of design principles and patterns. 
• Self motivated and proactive 
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
