Summer Internships Department of Atmospheric Sciences, University of Utah Salt Lake City, UT

Background. A new web-based open virtual community is being created to foster the exchange of ideas and information about environmental monitoring networks. Environets will be a forum/mashup for the continually growing and diverse community of owners, operators, and users of environmental data. Network owners operate and maintain observing platforms for a wide range of reasons: protection of life and property; management of air and water quality and water availability; transportation and fire weather; agriculture; diverse commercial needs; recreational interests, etc. Federal, state, and local agencies, commercial firms, educational institutions, and private citizens all participate in collecting environmental information. Environets will be a way to let others know what’s new and a mechanism to exchange ideas and information on best practices and standards developed within specific user communities.

Summer Internships. We are looking for 2-3 highly motivated undergraduate or graduate students to develop a state-of-the-art mashup to engage the environmental monitoring community. The development of the web site will be guided by members of the MesoWest team (http://mesowest.utah.edu) at the University of Utah and others in the environmental community involved in the project. The site’s basic structure will likely be developed using WordPress. Preference will be given to individuals available full time from May 15-August 15, but options for part-time internships may be available. Salary will be $15-$18 per hour depending on experience and qualifications.

Requirements. Enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program with exposure in the classroom or work environment to best practices for developing social-media oriented web sites and mashups. Programming experience using one or more of the following is desirable: Wordpress, SQL/MySQL databases, perl, Python, API development, Javascript, HTML5, CSS3, AJAX designed web pages, mobile device support, and software version control. Candidates must be self-driven, accountable under minimal supervision to reach project goals, and comfortable working in a research environment with other employees.
